I often think of the old saying: “If at first you don’t succeed, try, try again.” The biggest challenge of my practice and my teaching is remembering that attitude. “Try again” implies there is some end point to the exercise. Maybe there is. But I’m not sure that’s the case. I’m in the middle of a process that has no end point. It’s messy, it’s messy in ways that are obvious, and it’s messy in ways that are harder to pinpoint. Like this: I was in a conversation with a colleague a couple of weeks ago about the “industry” (the profession of psychology) and its reputation. My colleague pointed out that the reason it’s a respected and lucrative profession is because, “if you work in the profession, you can find a job.”
I kind of laughed. For sure, I know that most new psychologists find jobs right away. That’s the easy part. But the difficult part is that they may not find jobs that are really meaningful to them. That they’ll end up doing what they do not because they’re passionate about it, but because they’re driven to pay their bills.
I like the idea of being driven. I like the idea of being needed and helping people. I don’t like the idea that being needed and helping people is the only way to keep myself and others in an occupation. I’m not saying the profession shouldn’t be a career option. I’m saying it needs to be a more nuanced one.
This conversation was followed by a conversation with the man I mentioned in my previous post. He is a highly regarded and successful child psychologist who is being accused of crimes and unethical be359ba680
